Modaux : Obligation, conseil et déduction
Exemples :
- You must study for the test. (obligation)
- She should sleep more. (conseil)
- He can swim. (capacité)
2. Obligation (must, have to, need to)
- Must : Obligation subjective (parle de soi ou d’un ordre personnel). Exemple : I must finish my homework.
- Have to : Obligation extérieure (règle, loi, autre personne). Exemple : You have to wear a uniform at school.
- Need to : Obligation nécessaire (besoin). Exemple : I need to eat something.
⚠️ Attention : Mustn’t = interdiction, Don’t have to = pas d’obligation.
3. Conseil (should, ought to)
- Should : Conseil courant (souvent utilisé). Exemple : You should drink water every day.
- Ought to : Conseil formel ou moral (moins courant). Exemple : We ought to help the environment.
💡 Astuce : Shouldn’t = conseil négatif (ex : You shouldn’t eat too much candy).
4. Déduction (must, can’t, might, could)
- Must : Déduction certaine (probabilité forte). Exemple : She’s late. She must be stuck in traffic.
- Can’t : Déduction impossible (contraire de must). Exemple : He’s not answering. He can’t be at home.
- Might/Could : Déduction incertaine (moins sûr). Exemple : They might be on holiday.
5. Tableau récapitulatif
| Modalité | Verbe modal | Exemple | Négation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Obligation | must | I must wake up early. | mustn’t |
| have to | I have to go to school. | don’t have to | |
| Conseil | should | You should eat vegetables. | shouldn’t |
| Déduction | must | He must be tired. | - |
| can’t | She can’t be at home. | - |
6. Exercices d’application
- Complète : You ___ (must/should) wear a seatbelt in a car. → must (obligation).
- Traduis : Il devrait boire plus d’eau. → He should drink more water.
- Choisis : She ___ (can’t/must) be at the park. It’s raining! → can’t (impossible).
📌 À retenir : Les modaux n’ont pas de temps composés (I musted est faux !). Utilise have to au passé (I had to study).
